About this blog

Welcome to Reference Materials, a blog of The Dui Hua Foundation. This blog will compile prisoner cases, statistics, and regulations uncovered by Dui Hua researchers in open-source publications and documents issued or approved by Chinese government bodies. Each entry will contain an introduction, a Chinese text, and its English translation.

This electronic resource is a continuation of the 12-volume print series Reference Materials on China's Criminal Justice System (RM), which was distributed free of charge to select recipients from 2009 through September 2012. Occasional Publications (OP) is the 27-volume series that came before the RM. Published from 1999 to 2008, the OP series featured little-known criminal justice statistics and raised the cases of more than 1,000 detainees—many of whom were previously unheard of outside China.

The RM and OP series are now available for purchase in print and CD-ROM. All 39 volumes of the two sets can be obtained for a discounted price of US $1,000. Individual RM or OP volumes may be purchased for US $50 each.

A selection of topics discussed in RM and OP archives include:

  • Banned protestant groups
  • Clemency
  • Counterrevolution
  • Death penalty
  • June Fourth prisoners
  • Mass incidents
  • Mental illness
  • Stability
